Moqui Marbles are a concentration of iron oxide that covers a sandstone core. These were found in the Navajo Sandstone Formation of Utah. . They are named after the Moqui Indians who inhabited the lands where the marbles are found. In Hopi, Moqui means “dearly departed ones”.
According to legend, Hopi ancestors descended from heaven with the marbles and played games. It is believed that the ancestors return to heaven at sunrise leaving the marbles behind as a sign they are happy. They have also been referred to as “Thunderballs” and “Shaman Stones”.
There are many theories as to how Moqui Marbles are formed. One theory is that they formed from meteorites hitting the earth, causing a rain of small particles that hit the sand. Another theory is they were formed when groundwater flowed through permeable rock triggering a chemical reaction that caused minerals to precipitate around a nucleus and formed a layered ball. Moqui Marbles are likened to the “Blueberries” recently found on Mars.
