Michigan Kona Dolomite is named after the Kona Hills south of Marquette County, Michigan.  As a result of varying minerals, it can be found in a wide variety of colors.  For example shades of pink, brown, yellow, cream and  red .  In addition they can be orange with shades of brown, cream, gray and black mottling, banding and lacing.   Furthermore it is an ancient rock in which formations of fossil stromatolite (blue-green algae) occur.

Stromatolites are a calcareous mound built up of layers of lime-secreting cyanobacteria and trapped sediments.  found in Precambrian rocks as the earliest known fossils and at the same time are still being formed in lagoons in Australasia.
