Michigan Kona Dolomite is named after the Kona Hills south of Marquette County, Michigan. As a result of varying minerals, it can be found in a wide variety of colors. For example shades of pink, brown, yellow, cream and red . In addition they can be orange with shades of brown, cream, gray and black mottling, banding and lacing. Furthermore it is an ancient rock in which formations of fossil stromatolite (blue-green algae) occur.
Stromatolites are a calcareous mound built up of layers of lime-secreting cyanobacteria and trapped sediments. found in Precambrian rocks as the earliest known fossils and at the same time are still being formed in lagoons in Australasia.
