South America Meteorites for Sale
South America Meteorites – Campo del Cielo is the name given to a family of meteorite fragments. They were found in a 20 square mile area (crater) in northern Argentina.
The meteor was estimated to have impacted Earth around 4700-4200 years ago. The first recorded mention we have of this mineral dates back to 1576. The governor of a northern Argentina province used the military to search for a large piece of metal.
He was only aware of this material because of the knowledge from the aboroginal people of Argentina. They used this space rock for weapons and crafting material.

South American Meteorites: A Scientific and Geological Overview

South America is one of the most important regions in the world for meteorite discoveries. Its vast deserts, ancient geological surfaces, and long human history have made the continent a key location for studying extraterrestrial material. From iron meteorites found centuries ago to rare achondrites recovered in modern expeditions, South American meteorites continue to advance planetary science.
Why South America Is Important for Meteorite Research
Several factors make South America especially valuable to meteoritics:
-
Arid regions such as the Atacama Desert preserve meteorites exceptionally well
-
Low vegetation cover allows easier identification of meteorite fragments
-
Stable landscapes reduce erosion and burial
-
Long Indigenous and colonial records Historical Document
These conditions allow scientists to recover meteorites that may have landed thousands of years ago, offering a unique window into the early solar system.
Major Meteorite
The Atacama Desert (Chile)
The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth and one of the world’s most productive meteorite recovery zones.
-
Hosts ordinary chondrites, carbonaceous chondrites, and rare achondrites
-
Minimal weathering preserves fusion crusts and mineralogy
-
Frequently compared to Antarctic meteorite fields in scientific literature
Meteorites from Atacama are especially valuable for studying volatile loss, cosmic ray exposure ages, and parent body processes.
Campo del Cielo (Argentina)
-
Located in northern Argentina
-
Impact occurred approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago
-
Produced some of the largest iron meteorites ever recovered
These meteorites are primarily iron-nickel octahedrites, rich in kamacite and taenite, and are widely studied for crystallization rates and core formation in early planetary bodies.
Brazil and Uruguay
Brazil has yielded several scientifically significant meteorites, including:

-
Bless me – one of the largest iron meteorites ever found
-
Number
-
Well-documented recovery histories useful for terrestrial age studies
Uruguay, though smaller, has contributed iron meteorites important for regional classification and comparative analysis.
Types of Meteorites Found in South America

South American meteorite finds include nearly all major meteorite classes:
Ordinary Chondrites
-
Most common type
-
Contain chondrules formed over 4.5 billion years ago
-
Key to understanding early solar system formation
Iron Meteorites
-
Dominant in historic South American finds
-
Represent metallic cores of differentiated asteroids
-
Often large, stable, and well preserved
Stony-Iron Meteorites
-
Rare but scientifically valuable
-
Contain both silicate minerals and metal
-
Provide insight into core-mantle boundaries of parent bodies
Achondrites
-
Less common but highly important
-
Include basaltic meteorites linked to differentiated bodies
-
Help constrain volcanic activity on early planetary objects
Scientific Importance of South American Meteorites

Meteorites recovered from South America are used to study:
-
Planetary
-
Core formation in asteroids
-
Solar nebula chemistry
-
Cosmic ray exposure history
-
Impact dynamics and strewn field formation
Because many finds are minimally altered, they serve as high-quality reference samples in laboratories worldwide.
Conclusion
South American meteorites represent one of the richest and most scientifically important extraterrestrial records on Earth. From the ancient iron giants of Argentina to the pristine desert finds of Chile, these meteorites provide unparalleled insight into the formation and evolution of the solar system.
