Oligopygus was an extinct irregular echinoid (sea urchin) that lived during the Eocene Epoch, about 56 to 34 million years ago. Unlike regular sea urchins, it had a slightly heart-shaped or oval test with bilateral symmetry. In addition, it belonged to the order Spatangoida. As a result, it used short spines to burrow through soft marine sediments while feeding on organic material.
Today, collectors find well-preserved Oligopygus fossils in Florida’s Ocala Limestone. In addition, many specimens retain fine surface detail, including distinctive petal-like pore patterns. Therefore, collectors and museums highly value these fossils. However, complete specimens are less common because the thin shell often broke after burial. Consequently, they offer an excellent glimpse into Florida’s ancient Eocene seas. Oligopygus Echinoid Fossil for Sale.
