Mycterosaurus longiceps is a pelycosaur from the extinct family Vananopidae, subfamily Mycterosaurinae. Mycterosaurus is the most primitive member of its family. Like all members of Varanopidae,

Mycterosaurus most likely resembled the modern monitor lizard and may have had the same type of lifestyle.  Mycterosaurus is the most primitive member of its family. It lacked some features that its advanced relatives had.

Mycterosaurus was about 60 cm long.   The small size of Mycterosaurus suggests that this genus was as predator of small vertebrates and possible larger invertebrates.
