Stromatolites are up to 3.5 billion years old. As a result this makes them one of the earliest known organisms in the fossil record. Collenia are found in Precambrian Age Rocks. In this case they are 2.0 – 2.4 billion years old. In the same way these were formed, there are still stromatolites forming in lagoons in Australia.
Native Americans and many people today believe the stone has great healing powers. It also was the stone of choice for tool making by primitive people because of its hardness and content of chert and quartz,
The Biwabik Formation was once a shallow sea where mats of algae grew towards the sun’s light. As a result this produced the wiggling columns of stromatolites in the stromatolite.
