Falvius Claudius Julianus, surnamed “the Philosopher”, was born at Constantinople A.D. 331 and was the nephew of Constantine the Great. Julian was educated with care, and was brought up in the principles of the Christian religion. He was allowed to go to Athens in 355 to pursue his studies. He devoted himself with ardor to the study of Greek literature and philosophy. He received the title of Caesar the same year. The soldiers proclaimed him Emperor in 360 at Paris. The death of Constantius left Julian the undisputed master of the empire. He proclaimed that Christianity would be tolerated equally with paganism. He was killed in A.D. 363 in a battle against the Persians.
