Fossil Goniatites: Ancient Relatives of Modern Cephalopods
Fossil goniatites provide a fascinating record of marine life from the Paleozoic Era. These extinct cephalopods belonged to the ammonoid group and lived in ancient oceans for millions of years. Goniatites first appeared during the Devonian Period, about 400 million years ago. Later, they became especially common during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. However, they disappeared during the massive end-Permian extinction about 252 million years ago.
Goniatites had coiled shells divided into internal chambers. As the animal grew, it moved forward and created new chambers behind itself. Therefore, these chambers helped control buoyancy in the water. The living animal occupied the outermost chamber and likely used tentacles to capture food.
