WHAT IS THE FORT UNION FORMATION?
The Fort Union Formation is a geologic unit containing sandstones, shales, as well as coal beds. It is present in Wyoming, Montana, as well as parts of adjacent states. In addition to fossils it contains important economic deposits of coal, uranium, and coalbed methane in the Powder River Basin. The formation consequently is named after Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site in North Dakota. In particular the formation is Paleocene in age and was deposited between 65.5 and 55.8 million years ago. .
