Eurypterids, are also called sea scorpions.  In particular they are a group of extinct arthropods that form the order Eurypterida.  Furthermore the earliest known eurypterids date to the Ordovician period 467.3 million years ago. They used to swim in shallow seas across the globe over 400 million years ago.  It is the State Fossil of New York.                                                                                                        .
