Edmontosaurus is an extinct duck-billed dinosaur that belongs to the hadrosaur family. Two species are known: Edmontosaurus regalis and Edmontosaurus annectens. Furthermore, it was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to live before the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous Period. As a result, it shared its world with well-known dinosaurs such as Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus.
Like other duck-billed dinosaurs, Edmontosaurus had a large body, a long, flattened tail, and a wide, duck-like beak. However, unlike many other hadrosaurs, it did not have a bony head crest. Instead, a soft crest made of skin and scales is thought to have been present. In addition, its front legs were smaller and lighter than its powerful back legs. Even so, the front legs could still be used for standing and walking.
Adult Edmontosaurus could grow between 39 and 43 feet (12–13 meters) long. Likewise, its weight has been estimated at about 4.4 tons (4 metric tonnes). Overall, Edmontosaurus was one of the largest and most common plant-eating dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous.
