Dinosaur gastroliths are also known as stomach stones as well as gizzard stones. In this case they are rocks that were swallowed by dinosaurs to aid in digestion. These stones were often smooth and polished as a result of being ground against other rocks in the stomach. The use of gastroliths was not unique to dinosaurs, as some modern-day birds, reptiles, and fish also use them to aid in digestion. In the same way as the dinosaurs modern living animals such as crocodiles, alligators, birds, sea lions as well as seals also use them for digestion purposes.
