Campo del Cielo: An Ancient Visitor from Space
Campo del Cielo is a famous group of iron meteorites found in northern Argentina. About 4,000 years ago, a large iron meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere. Then, it broke into many pieces. As a result, large fragments struck the ground and formed at least 20 known impact craters across a long crater field.
Today, scientists classify Campo del Cielo as an IAB-MG iron meteorite. It consists mainly of iron and nickel. However, it also contains mineral inclusions. Therefore, these pieces give researchers clues about complex processes that occurred inside small bodies early in our solar system.
Although the meteorite fell thousands of years ago, people discovered its iron long before modern science studied it. In fact, the official meteorite record lists 1576 as its year of discovery. Since then, many large masses have been recovered. Together, recorded material totals about 50 metric tons.
Moreover, Campo del Cielo remains valuable to science. Because several fragments made craters, researchers can study how iron meteorites break apart, travel through the atmosphere, and strike Earth. Thus, this remarkable meteorite field helps connect planetary science, geology, and the ancient history of our solar system. In addition, preserved fragments allow scientists to compare impact effects directly.
