Description

Calcite Specimen

Calcite is a white or colorless mineral consisting of calcium carbonate. In this case it is a major constituent of sedimentary rocks such as limestone and consequently is deposited in caves to form stalactites and stalagmites.

At the same time, Calcite is a Carbon Dioxide Repository.  Carbon dioxide is an important gas in Earth’s environment. As a result, it serves as a greenhouse gas that works to trap and hold heat near the surface of the planet. Thus, the process of limestone formation removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it away for long periods of time.
