Anetoceras Heteromorph Ammonite were ammonoid cephalopods with unusual shell shapes.  They were particularly diverse during the Cretaceous period (145-66 million years ago).  Unlike most ammonoids, heteromorphs were not tightly coiled.

Ammonites are excellent index fossils.  They link the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to specific geologic time periods. Their fossil shells usually take the form of planispirals, although some helically spiraled and nonspiraled forms (known as heteromorphs) have been found.
