Spanish Pirate Coin | Made between the reigns of Phillip III thru Charles II. Each coin was minted in Spain and was the type most likely captured by the Pirates who stalked the seas in the late 1500’s to late 1700’s On many examples from that period, the coins were over-stamped by the successive King to obliterate the memory of the previous King. But it was also practical to use existing coins rather than having to get new stock and start from scratch. These coins were hand manufactured by cutting blanks from crudely cast bars or rods of refined copper, bronze or silver. Those blanks were then hand hammered between crudely engraved dies. Each coin is unique in shape and strike.
