  • Ammolite Placenticeras costatum  weighs 41kg. (90 lbs.) and measures 15 ½” (40 cm.) in diameter in a natural rock matrix that measures approximately 23” X 28 ½” (58 cm. x 72 cm.).  This is an extremely beautiful matrix specimen with excellent shape in a very sculpturally appealing natural rock matrix. This specimen boasts rich blues and purples on the outer venter transitioning through the spectrum of bright greens, golds and oranges to brilliant reds near the center whorl.  It has very well pronounced tubercles around the central whorl and displays great ribbing throughout.  It is a very visually appealing ammonite.  Only in one small area of North America does one find this brilliant gemstone. Over millions of years, the nacre of the ammonite’s shell has been transformed to take on this wild range of iridescent coloring.  It comes with a wood display stand and a certificate of authenticity. This specimen is registered with the Government of Canada.

WHAT IS AMMOLITE?

It is a rare, iridescent, gem-quality material cut from the fossilized shells of extinct sea creatures. Found only in the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, this organic gemstone has a dazzling range of colors and patterns and is highly desired for cabochons and assembled jewelry pieces as well as WHOLE Gem Ammonites.

WHERE DOES AMMOLITE COME FROM?

The Bearpaw Formation, also called the Bearpaw Shale, is a geologic formation of Late Cretaceous (Campanian) age. It outcrops in the U.S. state of Montana, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and was named for the Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. It includes a wide range of marine fossils, as well as the remains of a few dinosaurs. It is known for its fossil ammonites, some of which are mined in Alberta to produce the organic gemstone ammolite.
