- Ammonite # 1(1417) Placenticeras costatum. Measures approximately 49.5cm. (19 ½”) in diameter. Weighs 9.4 kg. (20.7 pounds). Spectacular mined ammonite! Almost as good as it gets. Very bright colours, excellent shape, well pronounced ribbing. The first side has the full spectrum from blues on the outside to reds in the center while the second side is mainly bright blues and greens. Excellent shape with well pronounced ribbing. It displays quite a lot of the rare blues with lots of bright reds, oranges, golds and greens. This ammonite comes from the bottom of the Bearpaw formation at the Korite mine. These are the layers where the best ammolite gemstones are found. Only in one small area of North America does one find this brilliant gemstone. Over millions of years, the nacre of the ammonite’s shell has been transformed to take on this wild range of iridescent coloring. It comes with a certificate of authenticity. For international shipping, all customs paperwork is included. This specimen is registered with the Government of Canada and leaves the country with all the required permits and documentation.

WHERE DOES AMMOLITE COME FROM?
The Bearpaw Formation, also called the Bearpaw Shale, is a geologic formation of Late Cretaceous (Campanian) age. It outcrops in the U.S. state of Montana, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and was named for the Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. It includes a wide range of marine fossils, as well as the remains of a few dinosaurs. It is known for its fossil ammonites, some of which are mined in Alberta to produce the organic gemstone ammolite.
