- Ammonite # 4(1416) Placenticeras costatum. Measures approximately 20 ½” (52 cm.) in diameter Excellent shape to this nice large ammonite. It displays lots of greens and golds with areas of reds, oranges and golds with quite a few areas with the rare blues on both sides. The mottled appearance in this ammonite really works and creates quite a desirable effect. This ammonite comes from the bottom of the Bearpaw formation at the Korite mine. These are the layers where the best ammolite gemstones are found. Only in one small area of North America does one find this brilliant gemstone. Over millions of years, the nacre of the ammonite’s shell has been transformed to take on this wild range of iridescent colouring. For international shipping, all customs paperwork is included. This specimen is registered with the Government of Canada and leaves the country with all the required permits and documentation.

WHERE DOES AMMOLITE COME FROM?
The Bearpaw Formation, also called the Bearpaw Shale, is a geologic formation of Late Cretaceous (Campanian) age. It outcrops in the U.S. state of Montana, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and was named for the Bear Paw Mountains in Montana. It includes a wide range of marine fossils, as well as the remains of a few dinosaurs. It is known for its fossil ammonites, some of which are mined in Alberta to produce the organic gemstone ammolite.
