The diversity of the fossils gives the scientific community a unique insight into the sea life that existed in Central Europe 180 million years ago.
The Posidonia Shale is actually a finely layered marlstone sludge consisting of clay and calcium carbonate that kerogen (a solid insoluble organic matter). These layers were super compressed from the weight of the layers deposited above them.
As a result, many of the fossils were compressed into very thin specimens such as the ammonites and crinoids. There are exceptions to this as evidenced by the gorgeous crocodiles, ichthyosaurus and fish that are preserved in three dimension.
