Bundenbach Fossils for Sale – The classical site of Bundenbach in Hunsrück Germany with its more than 270 animal species presents the world’s most important window into the Lower Devonian approx. 400 million years ago.

The uniqueness of the preservation of the fossils preserved in the slate is due to the physical and chemical changes that occurred when the marine deposits were buried rapidly during a cataclysmic event 400 million years ago. Low oxygen levels, low organic content of the organisms, high levels of iron & sulfur allowed the pyrite to enter the tissues causing the remains of the fossils to be pyritized in their marine deposit tomb. 

These marine deposits, now named Hunsruck Slate, were compressed between the continents of Gondwana and Laurussia when these plates shifted and fortunately, the deposits were compressed top to bottom like a vise. If the plates had slid and shifted most of the fossils may have been destroyed.
