Ammonites of the Pierre Shale – Glendive, Montana
Hoploscaphites Ammonite Fossil For Sale. During the Late Cretaceous, a vast inland sea covered much of central North America. Known as the Western Interior Seaway, this warm, shallow sea supported many marine animals. Ammonites, extinct relatives of modern squid and nautiluses, were among its most distinctive inhabitants.
Near Glendive in eastern Montana, the Pierre Shale preserves evidence of this ancient marine world. The shale formed as fine mud settled onto the seafloor. Moreover, mineral-rich concretions developed within these sediments. These hard nodules often protected shells from crushing and decay. As a result, some Pierre Shale ammonites retain remarkable shell detail.
Several kinds of ammonites lived in this region. Baculites had long, mostly straight shells rather than the familiar tightly coiled form. Meanwhile, scaphitid ammonites developed partly uncoiled, hook-shaped adult shells. Other unusual forms also occurred. In fact, fossils of Rhaeboceras have been scientifically documented from the Pierre Shale of Dawson County, Montana. We offer a large selection of Hoploschaphites Ammonite Fossil For Sale.
Most importantly, ammonites evolved rapidly. Therefore, paleontologists use different species as index fossils to identify and correlate layers of Late Cretaceous rock. Near Glendive, the upper Pierre Shale includes the Baculites grandis Zone.
Today, these beautiful fossils provide an important record of Montana when ocean water, rather than grassland, covered the region.
