Abyssomedon: A Small Parareptile from the Permian
Abyssomedon was a small parareptile that lived during the Early Permian Period, roughly 289 million years ago. Scientists know it from fossils found in Oklahoma, USA. Although the animal was small, its remains provide useful clues about early reptile relatives and their changing diets.
Abyssomedon williamsi belonged to a group called nycteroleterids. These parareptiles were part of an ancient branch of four-limbed vertebrates. However, Abyssomedon was unusual because its teeth differed from those of many related animals. Its broad, leaf-shaped teeth had several pointed cusps. Therefore, researchers have suggested that it may have eaten plants or a mixed diet rather than relying only on insects and other small animals.
