- Oreodont, also known as the “Ruminating Hog,” was an extinct hoofed mammal that lived in North America during the Oligocene and Miocene Epochs. However, it was not a true hog. Instead, it was more closely related to camels, sheep, and deer. In fact, its name comes from its pig-like appearance and its teeth, which were well suited for chewing plants like those of modern grazing animals.
