Septarian nodules are a type of concretion.   As a result of mudstone being interspersed with calcite or another carbonate-rich mineral. Furthermore, the calcite portions follow the pattern of radiating cracks, which occur during the unique creation of these formations.  In addition, under UV Light, the calcite also fluoresces.  I believe that the specimens from Utah are among the prettiest septarian’s on the planet.  Obviously beauty is ultimately in the eyes of the beholder.                                                     .
