In this case the 220 million year old slice of petrified wood has been polished on both sides. As a result the inner details and colors are highly visible. I think this is some of the prettiest petrified wood on the market.
Petrified wood forms as a result of wood being buried in wet sediments saturated with dissolved minerals. As well as that the lack of oxygen slows decay of the wood, allowing minerals to replace cell walls and to fill void spaces in the wood.
As a consequence of various dissolved elements in ground water the resulting colors are present:
carbon – black
cobalt – green/blue
chromium – green/blue
copper – green/blue
iron oxides – red, brown, and yellow
manganese – pink/orange
manganese oxides – blackish/yellow
