WHAT IS A METEORITE?
A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from an object, such as a comet, asteroid, or meteoroid, that originates in outer space and survives its passage through the atmosphere to reach the surface of a planet or moon. Meteorites that are recovered after being observed as they transit the atmosphere and impact the Earth are called meteorite falls. More than 90 percent of meteorites are of rock, while the remainder consist wholly or partly of iron and nickel.
In this case in 1931 the meteorite was an observed fall. Consequently it was discovered in Tunisia where scenes from Star Wars were filmed. The name of Luke Skywalker’s planet was given to the meteorite as a result. Only 12kg of fragments have been found over there making this a rare meteorite. Because of the small amount of fragments found comparable to others, this meteorite is a little more expensive.
