Varanops was a pelycosaur synapsid of the family Varanopidae. Ca. 1m long, it lived in North America during the second half of the Permian. It was one of the late surviving pelycosaurs, most pelycosaurs having already died out by the mid-Permian. Varanops became extinct at the early part of the Late Permian (ca. 260 Mya) along with its varanopid relatives due to competition with diapsids and therapsids.
